BOOP! is brought to the stage by an A-list creative team, including Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, La Cages aux Folles, Hairspray); Grammy Award-winning composer David Foster (“I Have Nothing,” “After The Love Is Gone,” “The Prayer”); lyrics by Tony Award nominee Susan Birkenhead (Working, Jelly’s Last Jam); Tony Award-winning bookwriter Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone, The Prom). The creative team had plenty of excitement to share about the upcoming world premiere.
Director Jerry Mitchell said, “Creating a NEW Broadway musical is such a gift. It is a special joy to be working on BOOP! in Chicago, so close to my hometown, at the very theatre where I first fell in LOVE with musicals when I saw A CHORUS LINE there back in 1978… BOOP! is for everybody. I promise the entire family will be singing and dancing as they walk up the aisle. BOOP! is a musical for our time.” He also added, “David Foster and Susan Birkenhead have created a first-class score to frame Bob Martin’s touching tale about an ICON, Betty Boop and her indomitable spirit in this Jazz Hot love story.”
On the other hand, Grammy Award-winning composer David Foster shared that the show had been in the works for a while before they made the premiere official. He said, “I’ve been working on this show, Betty Boop, for fourteen years.” The first news of the Betty Boop musical was revealed by Foster way back in 2014, he stated that they were doing their first reading of the musical and it would be ready to make its Broadway debut in 2018. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the project needed to be pushed back. It was later revealed in December 2022 that the premiere will arrive this year, 2023.

BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical is based on the characters created by Max Fleischer. She became “an overnight sensation in the ‘30s all thanks to her bubbly personality, flapper-inspired costumes, and oft-quoted “boop-boop-be-doop-boop” catchphrase,” as told by Dan Meyer of Theatrely. Max Fleischer created Betty Boop for his “Talkartoons” series, the world’s first animated “talkies” made by Max’s company, Fleischer Studios, for Paramount Studios. Betty first appeared as a dog-like stage singer who sang and danced with another dog-like character named Bimbo, cheerfully delighting large audiences of other Fleischer animal characters.
Betty Boop swiftly blossomed into a full-fledged human character inspired by the collective spirit, style, and sound of the numerous prominent Jazz Age entertainers of the 1920s. By 1932, she had become the world’s only female animated movie star. Betty, who was voiced by Mae Questel, appeared in almost 100 cartoons, 90 of which are included in the official Betty Boop series, which ended in 1939. Betty has starred in scores of popular movies, television specials, and advertisements since then, and she was the first cartoon character profiled by A&E’s Biography series.
Now, Betty Boop is making her pre-Broadway debut with a limited engagement for six weeks at the CIBC Theatre in Chicago. She’s leaping off from the screen and onto the stage for BOOP! The Boop-oop-a-doosical. This all-new and exciting world premiere is one you cannot miss! Witness Betty’s dream of an ordinary day off from the super-celebrity in her black-and-white world as it leads to an extraordinary adventure of color, music, and love in New York City. You’ll be hearing her say “you are capable of amazing things” all the way home! So go ahead and boop-oop-a-doop get your tickets to the show while spots last!
