Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s modern mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After penning the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to accoladed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the pair perfected the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would move up from its humble beginnings to a aspirational position on Broadway and other much-loved stages in London and Canada, making it a world-wide sensation.

Join us in the Underworld, where Hades runs a fruitful yet rigid factory called Hadestown. The subterranean workers perform their endless duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their independence. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice delight in a blossoming romance above ground, despite the challenges of winter’s famine.

Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter escalates above-ground longings. Eurydice, affected by unmet needs and influenced by the alluring suggestions of the Fates, lusts after the security Hadestown promises. She eventually makes her way to the underground industrial complex and signs a contract in exchange for guaranteed food.

Her contract entangles her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an unswaying Hades, pressured by his disquieted workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades force Eurydice to do his bidding forever?

In 2019, the musical acquired 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its dazzling achievements and wall-to-wall audiences demonstrate the play’s kinship with a present era while combining classical elements from the past.
